How To Play Piano in Rock & Roll Style
Rock and Roll music is a unique style which uses parts of several styles including classical, country, folk, jazz and rhythm & blues. This type of music stems from exposing the musicians emotions which leads to telling stories that at times can be humorous in nature; feelings of angrer, power, depression, sadness or even at times, feelings that does not even make any sense at all.
Though many would associate rock music with ear-piercing vocals and loud guitars, numerous rock geniuses will attest to the fact that a piano can hold its own in an arena of deafening sounds showing that it too is an instrument that can defy its own stereotype.
For those interested to play rock songs with a piano, remember that if one has never played this instrument before, it is unlikely that one can instantaneously play Piano Man with it. Like any other person who would like to learn this instrument, it is recommended that they take their first lessons and start off with something easy like Chopsticks. Eventually, this will lead to a progression in which the individual can begin to appreciate, learn and apply the basics in rhythm, style and tone.
Some key points to remember when learning to play rock music on the piano is that one must take the time to learn and read each individual note. This means that one should not simply learn how to play the chords. Do not forget that a piano is not a guitar so take the time and effort to practice more often.
In the process of learning the basics on how to play piano songs; one can begin purchasing CDs that contain their favorite rock music that are heavily influenced with piano accompaniment. While you listen to the songs, begin to pick up the tone and tempo. Also, try to examine one's favorite rock songs and figure out what key these songs are played in.
Next, you must move towards learning how to play the major and minor and dominant 7th. One must also start playing diminished and half diminished chords wherein a chord is playing two or more notes in a consecutive manner. With regards to a diminished chord, it is basically a musical chord that has a diminished fifth. While practicing all these, it is recommended that the individual continues to analyze and learn the sheet music while listening to one's favorite rock songs.
The next step would be to invert one's chords. Take note that these are chords wherein the bass is not the root chord. This should be practiced once the individual has already learned how to play their 7ths. You should also practice playing the pentatonic scale. Bear in mind that playing a different key produces slight variations in the pentatonic scale.
Once you have the basics of how to play piano songs down, you can start playing some of your favorite rock music on the piano. In the beginning, you must understand that it will take time to learn some of the complicated styles of rock music. Always remember that practice makes perfect so make sure to allocate some time for practice. Keep in mind that most rock music created for piano playing are made in such a way that the individuals play the harmony using their right hand and the melody with their left.
Note that there is a possibility that the rock songs being played on the piano might not sound like the ones in the CD. This is because musicians are known to be clever and skillful. Once you figure out how the melody and harmony merge to create the sound, you can begin to play around with the chords and improvise with the tones and maybe even add some of your own notes. This goes to show that most musicians do not simply rely on reading music but also jump at the chance to be innovative and creative.
