Diana Krall Has Left Her Mark On The Jazz World...And She Has Only Just Begun

The voluptuous, elegant, and extraordinarily gifted Canadian born Diana Krall has left her mark as one of the finest jazz vocalists of her time. The jazz pianist and singer, known for her contralto vocals, has sold more than six million albums in the US and an abundance of over 15 million worldwide.  In a time period stretching between the 1990s and 2000s, no female jazz artist has sold more albums than Diana. Her magnificent legacy as one of the most prolific artists of her time was further established in December of 2009, when Billboard magazine named her the number two jazz artist of the 2000-2009 decade. No other jazz singer equal or amass Diana's eight albums debuting at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums. Her trophy case includes three Grammy Awards, eight Juno Awards, nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums.

Krall was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. She was from a musical family, as her father played piano around the house while her mother sang in a community choir. By the age of four, Diana was already playing piano and by 15, she was entertaining locals at the neighborhood restaurant playing jazz. She attended the Berkley College of Music in Boston on a scholarship before heading out to Los Angeles to play jazz. She returned to Canada to release her first album, Steppin' Out in 1993.

Krall's mother Adella passed away from multiple myeloma in 2002, within months of also losing her mentors Ray Brown and Rosemary Clooney. Diana's only sibling, Michelle, is a former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Krall and British musician Elvis Costello were married on December 6, 2003 at Elton John's estate outside of London. They have twin sons, Dexter Henry Lorcan and Frank Harlan James, born in December of 2006 in New York City.

Diana Krall earned her highest ever chart debut with her album Quiet Nights, landing at number three on the Billboard 200 in April 2009. With 104,000 scans, this is the musician's second largest sales week of her career thus far and her fourth consecutive studio album to place in the top 10. Released in March of '09, under the label of Verve Records, Quiet Nights is the Canadian jazz singer-songwriter's ninth studio album.

The release of the album marked Kralls reunion with arranger Claus Ogerman. Ogerman is inarguably one of the most fruitful 20th century arrangers, having worked in the Top 40, Rock, Pop, Jazz, R&B, Soul, Easy listening, Broadway and Classical music fields.  It is yet to be determined the exact number of recording artists for whom Ogerman has either arranged or conducted during his stoic career. Krall and Ogerman last teamed up in 2002 for Live in Paris, and before that, in 2001 for The Look of Love. Billboard ranked that album at number five on the magazine's Top Jazz Albums of the Decade.

In 2000, Krall was awarded the Order of British Columbia, followed by an honorary Ph.D. in Fine Arts in 2003 from the University of Victoria. In 2004, Diana was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.

In the nineteen twenties there was the Charleston dance craze, whilst before that ballroom dancing was the thing. Ballroom dancing is, like Lindy Hop, partner dancing. In other words couples dance together, in physical contact. Also in the nineteen twenties there was a degree of racial segregation in the USA, which meant that ballrooms like the Savoy in Harlem were mostly frequented by black dancers, ballrooms like the Roseland mostly frequented by whites. Although the Savoy was the first ballroom not to be officially segregated, so white dancers could, and did, go there in small numbers. The big bands of the era sometimes had black and white musicians, less so in the early days when most were one or the other.

In the Savoy ballroom in Harlem, as early as nineteen twenty six, (the Savoy opened its doors for the first time in March nineteen twenty six), black musicians were experimenting and leading the way, swing music was emerging. The Charleston dance craze was declining. Later, the new musical style would be copied by Benny Goodman. Some historians credit the start of the swing age to a later tour by Benny Goodman, nineteen thirty five in fact, which is actually somewhat after the fact!

Benny Goodman had listened to the musicians in Harlem and his band were swing pioneers, as far as white folks were concerned. A great band they were too, but they were not the first innovators of the genre. By the thirties Benny Goodman was playing swing on his late night radio slot in New York and when he went on tour he struggled, well he struggled in New York and all stations west until he got to California where they were queued around the block. The reason being that his late night New York radio programme was being picked up at peak time all those miles west, different time zone of course, and the people loved it. Officially this is when the swing age was born. However, go back to nineteen twenty six in Harlem and you'd find black dancers there were experimenting with new moves to fit the new music, from Fletcher Henderson primarily and they'd adapted Charleston moves to fit their new style too.

The new dance didn't really have a name. It's been suggested that they called it the breakaway, because in ballroom male dancers kept the lady close, but in the new dance she was 'swung out'. Others say breakaway is rather the original name for a move which today is called a swing out and that the dance was simply called The Hop. So to 1927. There were dance marathons then, remember the movie ‘They Shoot Horse's Don't They'. It was at a dance marathon, so the story goes that a newspaper journalist asked a black dancer by the name of Shorty George Snowden "hey, what's that new dance you're doing?" Presumably no one outside the Savoy had seen it much. Well George, who has a dance step named after him, the ‘Shorty George' unsurprisingly, was a bit of a wit. Furthermore, that week or maybe even that day a young man called Charles Lindbergh had made the first solo aeroplane flight across the Atlantic, non stop. America was in love with its new hero and a newspaper headline had read (reputedly, although I've been unable to find it) ‘Lucky Lindy Hops The Atlantic'. "We call it the Lindy Hop" quipped George and so a new dance craze was born.

The dance had its apogee in the forties and went through the dark days of wartime, surviving into the fifties when smaller, less costly rock and roll bands put the big bands out of business. Well mostly, it was still possible to find some swing even in the ironically named swinging sixties, and jazz of course goes on through every storm and changing fashion.

Music like all the creative arts and indeed sciences has to progress, Rock and Roll, Bill Haley and Elvis they were the immediate future in the early fifties. Swing and swing dance had ruled the roost for twenty five years a remarkable thing when you look at popular music today. In that time swing produced a great variety of great music, and the dancers innovated so many steps and styles that you could learn the Lindy Hop for a lifetime and still not know it all. Jazz $11.14 Famously tagged as "fascist" in a Rolling Stone review printed at the time of its 1978 release, Jazz does indeed showcase a band that does thrive upon its power, thrilling upon the hold that it has on its audience. That confidence, that self-intoxication, was hinted at on News of the World but it takes full flower here, and that assurance acts as a cohesive device, turning this into one of Queen's sleekest albums. Like its patchwork predecessor, Jazz also dabbles in a bunch of different sounds -- that's a perennial problem with Queen, where the four songwriters were often pulling in different directions -- but it sounds bigger, heavier than News, thanks to the mountains of guitars Brian May has layered all over this record. If May has indulged himself, Freddie Mercury runs riot all over this album, infusing it with an absurdity that's hard to resist. This goofiness is apparent from the galloping overture "Mustapha," and things only get a lot sillier from that point out, as the group sings the praises of "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Bicycle Races," as May and Mercury have an unspoken competition on who can overdub the most onto a particular track while Roger Taylor steers them toward their first disco song in the gloriously dumb "Fun It." Blues Beneath the Palms - Hua Hin Jazz Festival

From a quiet backwater to hosting one of Asia's premier Jazz festivals, Hua Hin a favorite resort of Thai royalty since the 1920s is a quiet space to get away from the din of Bangkok. The festival itself took shape in the 1950s starting with the current King of Thailand's love of Jazz and its promotion in Thailand as a result. Organized by the Hua Hin Hoteliers Club, the Festival has been successfully held for ten years putting the event firmly on Thailand's entertainment calendar.

This year the event is expected to be held from the 10th to the 12th of June and will be the highlight of the summer season. Stages for the performances are expected to be set up on the beach and in Phonkingphet Park in the city centre. Acclaimed international European, South American, US and Asian jazz groups and several popular jazz groups from Thailand itself are expected to participate. The city gears itself up for the occasion and puts on a festive air and lays on many facilities for the use of festival goers. Jazz fans jam from around three in the afternoon till mid night to various jazz sub genres cooled by ocean breezes at beach venues of the festival. Crowds more than double the population of this normally quiet city during the festival.

Entrance is free for all performances and jazz enthusiasts jam from 3.30 in the evening till midnight. The beach location is very popular with its wonderful ambience, jazz lovers sitting and lying on the sand enjoying great jazz selections being played in the various sub genres in many distinctive styles. One hundred thousand people per night are expected to attend the festival this year, swelling the city's population by more than half. The whole town gears up for the event to put on the best show possible with special arrangement being made to transport festival goers, streets near venues turned into pedestrian only streets and lined with food stalls filling the air with pungent oriental aromas. Restaurants and café's offer special prices and hotels close to venues host special dinners and seating for guests.
