Interview: LifeWay Southern Baptist teacher David Francis about Sunday school, the strong program, by Peter Menkin

In a letter via email, LifeWay's David Francis, Director, Sunday school, Discipleship, Church & Network Partnerships, LifeWay Church Resources, supplies a response to this writer’s inquiry regarding Southern Baptists, the Sunday School Church.   He responds in part to questions asked of Sharon Ely Pearson of the Episcopal Church in her earlier interview. The answers themselves provide a context for his statement. But note his email carries this quotation: “As God works through us . . . We will help people--through churches--know Jesus Christ and seek His Kingdom by providing biblical solutions that spiritually transform individuals and cultures.”   The questions with answers are found below this email letter, an informative and full reply that has the mark of inspiration and spontaneity:   The email letter: Sunday school remains a strong program of ministry in Southern Baptist churches. On a typical Sunday in our denomination, about 6 million people will gather for worship in SBC congregations. About 4 million will attend Sunday school, or two out of three worshipers. My estimate is that these folks will attend one of more than 400,000 Sunday school classes. Well over half of those who attend one of these classes, typically meeting on Sunday mornings before or after a worship service, will be adults.

In an analysis I conducted with Eric Geiger, co-author with LifeWay President Thom Rainer of the popular book Simple Church, we found that in a sample of the SBC's most vibrant churches, over 87% operated Sunday school--or its functional equivalent by another name--as the critical "second step" in their church's discipleship process. 50% of these groups simply called the program "Sunday School." The rest used a different term, although I would agree with one of the comments made in response to the Episcopalian article that most of the folks still just call it "Sunday School" regardless of any new, official, cool name!

The other 12.5%? Those churches' primary "Step 2" strategy was off-campus small groups--at least for the adults. This is a shift in Southern Baptist church practice, to be sure. Nevertheless, Sunday school remains very strong.

In terms of broader "faith formation," the term preferred by your Episcopal source, Sharon Ely Pearson, Southern Baptist churches have traditionally operated another program ministry to help members grow more deeply in their faith, defend its doctrines, and equip themselves for ministry and missions.   This program is typically called "Discipleship" or "Discipleship Training." That name has evolved more than "Sunday School." It was originally "Baptist Young People's Union," then "Training Union," then "Church Training," then "Discipleship Training," and now typically just "Discipleship" or some name that includes the word, such as "University of Discipleship."   Typically, the occasion for "Discipleship" offers a variety of elective options. That occasion has typically been on Sunday evenings, before an evening service. In some churches, the occasion is Wednesday evenings. In others, these elective courses are offered at various times throughout the week.   The important thing to note is that in terms of "faith formation," this program ministry represents sort of a "third step" in a discipleship process where worship attendance is step 1 and a Sunday school class or small group is step 2. Hope that makes sense! Or provides you some ammo for a probing question!

Part of our assignment at LifeWay is to provide curriculum materials for both Sunday school and Discipleship groups. Our full name is LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention, and we are governed by a Board elected by the convention, and are therefore an SBC entity. We enjoy a broad base of customers from many denominations, however.   LifeWay also operates a chain of LifeWay Christian Stores and produces Bibles and trade books through our B&H Publishing Division, along with the products and services offered through the division where I work, LifeWay Church Resources.       The Interview: Is salvation individual, and if it is how the congregational or Church experience does enter into the experience and faith formation process? In what way does LifeWay introduce a concept of individual salvation and the salvation of the congregation and Church?

Salvation is individual for Baptists over against a "covenant" understanding of salvation held by those in some faith walks (such as the Presbyterian Church in which I was raised!). Here is a link to the article on "Salvation" from the Baptist Faith & Message, a statement generally agreed to (but not a creed that is binding on) by Southern Baptists.Jerry Vogel, Director of Childhood Ministry Publishing at LifeWay, wrote: "Salvation is definitely an individual response/decision. The church experience for children should include some type of small group learning experience. LifeWay resources begin at birth to lay the foundation upon which God's Spirit can work and draw each child unto Himself in a personal relationship.    These concepts from birth through Preteen are represented in our Levels of Biblical Learning document showing the natural progression of learning precept upon precept by children. Significant adults in the church congregation provide the environment of unconditional love and trust building needed for children to begin their faith journey.   A well-planned scope and sequence provided in LifeWay childhood resources (continued throughout all of LifeSpan, providing foundations for salvation for all focus age groups beyond childhood) helps guide teachers along a balanced journey of creating learning environments for children to "hear, know and do" God's Word.)"

Together, these documents illustrate our approach to "Faith Development." We have similar guidelines that guide our approach to students (youth) and adults:

How is Sunday school Christian oriented? That is student and teacher?

Sunday school teachers must be Christians. The students need not be. That includes adults. We promote Sunday school as "open groups practicing open enrollment."   I have coined a five-word definition of an open group: "Expects new people every week." An open group is an intentional mixture of believers and unbelievers, Baptists and non-Baptists, veteran and "rookie" church-goers. In fact, any person can enroll in any Sunday school class at any time, without making any obligation--to become a church member or even a Christ follower.   The way I say it is "Enrolling in Sunday School does not make you a church member or obligate you to become one." I also have a five-word definition of this concept of "open enrollment:" You can belong before you believe." Even if you never choose to believe. These principles are two of the distinctive of how Sunday school is practiced in many Southern Baptist churches.

What new directions are taken with students, re previous decades? Please speak to the new wave experience of Cell Groups.

I actually "debated" LifeWay's small groups specialist, Rick Howerton, in a live on-line format recently on the topic "Sunday School vs. Small Groups."
The number one challenge for the small group movement is the question, "What do you do with the kids?" Or, more seriously, at least from the standpoint of faith development, "What do you do meaningfully with the kids?" LifeWay has a brand new resource, Small Group Life that attempts to address that question.   In addition to inexpensive Bible study guides for each participant, who are flexible enough to be used either every week or every other week, free online helps are available for Bible-centered activities with the kids--written in such a way that a teenager can execute the plans--that connect conceptually to the material being studied by the parents. Does praise of God enter into the equation of Sunday school? What component does this hold in the formal Curriculum?

Music has historically been an important element of Southern Baptist Sunday Schools. Back in the pioneer days of the Sunday school movement, when Sunday Schools met many places where there was no organized church or formal worship/preaching experience, Sunday Schools conducted "opening assemblies," where participants gathered together before going to their individual age-group classes. Singing was an important part of this "general assembly."   Fewer and fewer churches continue this practice today, but some do. In terms of curriculum, all of LifeWay's Sunday school materials for preschoolers and students include music as an important element. Preschool music is available as a separate resource, a CD-ROM that includes additional teaching materials as well as music.   My wife and I teach pre-K kids in our church. Yesterday, we began a unit on prayer. I put the CD in the player and set it to repeat a song about thanking God. After hearing it all morning, the kids were ready to sing it when we gathered for "large group time" to hear the Bible story. In LifeWay's curriculum materials for elementary children, the music CD is included in the Leader Pack. Words to all songs on the CDs are printed in the back of the leader guides. LifeWay's innovative curriculum for youth, KNOWN, includes an mp3 playlist: 

Music as well as serial dramas are a feature of LifeWay's DVD-driven youth curriculum, called Fuel.

What is the prime difference in approach between youth and children, and where does it break? Will you tell us something of the "care and feeding of babies" in the Sunday school experience and approach? This seems unusual, that babies get religious education.

LifeWay is one of the few--if not the only--publisher that produces a line of Sunday school curriculum especially for babies. We believe strongly that that the preschool years are the most important in spiritual as well as physical, emotional, and intellectual development. If nothing else, babies can learn that church is a safe place to go and that people who care for me there love me and love Jesus. One of the Levels of Biblical Learning documents focuses on babies and what we believe they can learn about 8 basic biblical concepts.

What music do you use?

Think I answered that above. We have actually been pleasantly surprised at the success of the new Baptist Hymnal (also published under the name Worship Hymnal) which LifeWay Worship published just last year as the "hard goods" part of an ambitious next generation online platform called The Worship Project. This project promises to put great musical accompaniment at the fingertips of even the smallest church.

Why do you think Sunday school practice, that is the Sunday school itself as educational entity in the individual church is so high in the Southern Baptist church? I note the Wall Street Journal article says Sunday Schools are on the decline:

"Why Sunday Schools are Closing," by Charlotte Hays says, "Fewer children are having that experience, though. Like West Olive United Methodist, many churches have drastically curtailed or given up entirely on Sunday school for children. Two years ago, Bruce Morrison, an official with the Missouri Baptist Convention, wrote about attending a "ministry conference where several denominations were represented." During a break, he recalled, "I overheard a discussion between several of the attendees about the value of Sunday school in today's culture. The implication was that Sunday school ministry in the local church is obsolete."

Two responses, not in order: (1) I would recommend that a careful reader of the cited article read the comments posted in response to the online article. Some challenge the accuracy of the reporter's conclusions. Enough said. (2) Sunday School--or more broadly, Bible study in age/life-stage appropriate groups--is just important to Southern Baptists.   Maybe it's a cultural thing. A historical thing. And it is typically year-round. No summer break. Not just for kids while mom and dad go to worship. For the typical Southern Baptist church, the first two steps of its disciple-making process are worship and assimilation/foundational discipleship/fellowship/ministry through small group Bible study. As I note in the conclusion to an analysis conducted as a follow-up to the popular book Simple Church, "What could be simpler? Accomplishing the first two steps of your discipleship process, with every member of the family, on one trip to the church?!?" (Just Google "Sunday School in Simple Church" if you'd like to see the entire paper.)

I was interested to hear you say the worship experience is number one in the Sunday school experience. Will you say more about that and something of the role of the Sermon?

I think my point is the same as above: The worship service is the primary/first step in the discipleship process for most churches today. Sunday school used to be. In fact, Southern Baptist churches were not asked to report worship attendance until 1990, at which time average annual Sunday school attendance was 85% of reported worship attendance. That ratio has steadily declined to a about 2/3, with a typical Sunday finding 4 million people in Southern Baptist Sunday Schools and 6 million people in worship (including preschoolers being cared for during worship, children's worship, any separate youth worship services, etc.).   That is still strong versus the same ratio in other denominations. (Assemblies of God and Nazarenes may give us a run for the money!)

How to get 1000 hits a day!

Search is a great way to get unsolicited traffic. You want to choose a domain name that is as close to the common search results for your niche as possible. By doing some research using google adwords keyword tool, you can find that the term "dogs" is searched 16,600,000 times a month globally. Google naturally rates sites higher that are exact matches to the search terms in their algorithm. So you want to be the top search result organically for a commonly searched term in your niche, which in the previous example would be www.dogs.com. Most of the single words like that are taken, but with some research you can find a keyword that is searched commonly, but does not have a lot of competition.

But even if you already have your domain name and it does not match the search term exactly, you are still ok! What you'll want to do is called SEO or Search Engine Optimization. SEO can be extremely complicated so I'll just touch on it here and leave the advanced details for a future post. But, what you want to do is optimise your site so they are maximally visible to search engines. The first thing you will want to do is change your permalink structure.

WordPress by default has a permalink structure like this:
http://dogs.com/?p=N

This isn't very searchable, because no one (especially the search engines) is going to remember that the link to your post titled "How to train your dog" is tied to the url http://dogs.com/?p=N! Instead, change your url structure to something like %postname%. For the "How to train your dog" example, this would change the url to http://dogs.com/how-to-train-your-dog. Google identifies dashes as spaces so searches for "how to train your dog" are now more likely to land on your page. So in your wordpress dashboard go to Settings>Permalinks and change the structure like below:

The other thing you will want to do to get higher results is get backlinks from high pageranked sites. This is not always the easiest thing to do, because you can't just ask every site to put a link to your page on their site. There are link exchanges that will do this, but in my experience, you aren't going to get high value links. The best way to get links is to comment on other blogs in your niche. DON'T SPAM them or they will delete your comments every time and you'll be back where you started. Just make meaningful comments on their page and be sure to put your website in the appropriate field. Many of these links have the nofollow tag after them, which means web crawlers (search engines) can not follow them to your site, so they don't count as a backlink to your site. However, some sites allow following from the comments and these can be extremely valuable. Comment hunt is a custom google search that allows you to find blogs in your niche that have dofollow links. Again, DON'T SPAM, you want your links to be valuable and you don't want to be a spammer.

There are entire blogs devoted to SEO and becoming the top result in google, so this is an extremely condensed version. I will definitely be covering the advanced tips later, but this is a good primer.

Yahoo! Answers

While google pretty much has the search market dominated. Yahoo! has the answers market cornered and there are tons of people looking for valuable information in every niche. What you'll want to do is find questions relevant to your niche and give valuable answers. At the bottom of the answer there is a field for source. While that field does not create clickable links (doesn't count as a nofollow or dofollow link), it does increase exposure to your site. My first day on Yahoo! Answers got me a commission with in 1 hour of posting. BE CAREFUL not to post any affiliate links in your answer or source, because you will get banned. Only give people the information they are genuinely asking for, and don't stray too far from that because they will mark your questions as spam and ban you with little to no warning.

Social News and Bookmarking Websites

Social news websites are massive sites where users vote on content they like. Valuable content comes to the top while less valuable content goes to the bottom. Reddit, digg, mixx get massive amounts of traffic and have been known to take sites to their knees by funneling so much traffic their way. You can get your link on these sites 2 ways,

1) Submit a link yourself
2) Submit comments including your link (possibility of getting "buried" if people vote it down)

Besides social news sites are social bookmarking sites. Like delicious, stumble upon, diigo, etc. These allow users to bookmark sites they like and share their bookmarks with other users. These links can be extremely powerful and can funnel traffic at an amazing rate.

Squidoo Lenses

Squidoo is a site that has user created content (much like a blog) and allows you to get laser targeted traffic. You can create a "Lens" in your genre and post information there that eventually leads users to your main blog/site. It helps increase your online presence and is just another place on the internet that has tons of users that your site can potentially be exposed to. It is all about getting your name out there in as many places as possible and squidoo is awesome for that right now. Squidoo extremely hot in the search engines right now. Plus, it is easy to get highly ranked search results from Squidoo lenses for the most competitive search terms that would be much harder to do with a lower PR site. When people search for keywords related to your squidoo lense, it will sometimes be a top result for their query just because squidoo has so much pr.

Twitter

Twitter is one of the most powerful ways to generate traffic for your site. There are very few places on the internet where you can put your link and guarantee that thousands of people will see it instantly. The only problem new users have with twitter is they don't have any followers so they never get their true potential. You could search for people who are tweeting things about your niche and manually add them, but that takes tons of time. A great tool I use is called Tweet Adder and of all the twitter tools out there, I have found it to be the easiest to use. It allows you to schedule tweets, shorten urls, mass follow and mass unfollow users all with the click of a button. You may be wondering why you would want to unfollow users automatically. If you go on twitter and see a user who is following 1000 users and only has 40 people following them are you going to think they are very credible? Absolutely not, so what tweet adder will do is auto unfollow people who do not follow back within a configurable amount of time. If you get any tool I recommend, get this one. It even offeres a free trial so you can try it risk free without giving them any credit card info!

Another program that is great for Twitter is market me suite and it is exceptional. It lets you brand tweets with your link, target based on geolocation and a whole host of other amazing tools. MarketMeSuite is the bentley of social marketing software!

Facebook

It should almost go without saying that you should use Facebook to market yourself. 1 in 13 people worldwide have an account and that number is only growing! Create a fan page and start getting likes. You will not regret it, and can definitely make money if you use the correct terms. There are so many things you can do with your Facebook fan page (not group, they are outdated). Offer special deals, link to your other sites (youtube, your blog, etc), create your branding (logos, images). There are simply too many people using Facebook for you to ignore the massive traffic you can be getting from it. I'll cover more on Facebook in another post.

Article Marketing

Use articles to promote your websites by publishing them to various article directories. It has been around for ages and was once the best way to get thousands of unique hits per day just by itself. Google recently made a change to their algorithm that puts less value in their links, but that doesn't make it ineffective entirely. When you use a site like Article Base, website owners can grab your article and post it, giving you valuable backlinks. The algorithm change makes this less effective, but it can still be huge. Make sure you use keywords relevant to your niche in your article and title so website owners will be able to find it.

Forum Posts

Join some forums that are related to your niche and start posting. Some forums will let you put a link to your website in your signature, which is another effective link. You will also become a resource to other people in your niche and that will bring people to your site. Forums are a great resource for just about every subject out there. Just become a mainstay on some of the forums and people will start to recognize you. They will start coming to you for answers to their questions and it will be incredible for your analytics.

Classifieds

Finally, post classified ads under sections that are relevant to what you are selling. Classifieds are great because people who are on classifieds are already looking for the product you're selling. THEY WANT TO BUY, all they need is a link to a site with the product they want. When I started my first amazon affiliate store, I was able to get 80 hits a day just from classifieds and nowhere else. I don't see many people using this method and it is pure gold. Just be sure to follow the terms of any site you join and make sure when you link, you are using anchor text with your site's keywords. These are also nofollow links, but with a site like craigslist, the pr is so high, it is still valuable.

Content

As you may have already heard, content is king. You can do everything above perfectly, but if you do not have anything valuable on your site for people to link to, no one will come back. You want visitors to come back because it takes a person an average of 5 times seeing something before they pull the trigger and make a purchase. So write content that people want to see and it will keep them coming back and you'll be well on your way to making money online!

The History Of Lindy Hop

In the nineteen twenties there was the Charleston dance craze, whilst before that ballroom dancing was the thing. Ballroom dancing is, like Lindy Hop, partner dancing. In other words couples dance together, in physical contact. Also in the nineteen twenties there was a degree of racial segregation in the USA, which meant that ballrooms like the Savoy in Harlem were mostly frequented by black dancers, ballrooms like the Roseland mostly frequented by whites. Although the Savoy was the first ballroom not to be officially segregated, so white dancers could, and did, go there in small numbers. The big bands of the era sometimes had black and white musicians, less so in the early days when most were one or the other.

In the Savoy ballroom in Harlem, as early as nineteen twenty six, (the Savoy opened its doors for the first time in March nineteen twenty six), black musicians were experimenting and leading the way, swing music was emerging. The Charleston dance craze was declining. Later, the new musical style would be copied by Benny Goodman. Some historians credit the start of the swing age to a later tour by Benny Goodman, nineteen thirty five in fact, which is actually somewhat after the fact!

Benny Goodman had listened to the musicians in Harlem and his band were swing pioneers, as far as white folks were concerned. A great band they were too, but they were not the first innovators of the genre. By the thirties Benny Goodman was playing swing on his late night radio slot in New York and when he went on tour he struggled, well he struggled in New York and all stations west until he got to California where they were queued around the block. The reason being that his late night New York radio programme was being picked up at peak time all those miles west, different time zone of course, and the people loved it. Officially this is when the swing age was born. However, go back to nineteen twenty six in Harlem and you'd find black dancers there were experimenting with new moves to fit the new music, from Fletcher Henderson primarily and they'd adapted Charleston moves to fit their new style too.

The new dance didn't really have a name. It's been suggested that they called it the breakaway, because in ballroom male dancers kept the lady close, but in the new dance she was 'swung out'. Others say breakaway is rather the original name for a move which today is called a swing out and that the dance was simply called The Hop. So to 1927. There were dance marathons then, remember the movie ‘They Shoot Horse's Don't They'. It was at a dance marathon, so the story goes that a newspaper journalist asked a black dancer by the name of Shorty George Snowden "hey, what's that new dance you're doing?" Presumably no one outside the Savoy had seen it much. Well George, who has a dance step named after him, the ‘Shorty George' unsurprisingly, was a bit of a wit. Furthermore, that week or maybe even that day a young man called Charles Lindbergh had made the first solo aeroplane flight across the Atlantic, non stop. America was in love with its new hero and a newspaper headline had read (reputedly, although I've been unable to find it) ‘Lucky Lindy Hops The Atlantic'. "We call it the Lindy Hop" quipped George and so a new dance craze was born.

The dance had its apogee in the forties and went through the dark days of wartime, surviving into the fifties when smaller, less costly rock and roll bands put the big bands out of business. Well mostly, it was still possible to find some swing even in the ironically named swinging sixties, and jazz of course goes on through every storm and changing fashion.

Music like all the creative arts and indeed sciences has to progress, Rock and Roll, Bill Haley and Elvis they were the immediate future in the early fifties. Swing and swing dance had ruled the roost for twenty five years a remarkable thing when you look at popular music today. In that time swing produced a great variety of great music, and the dancers innovated so many steps and styles that you could learn the Lindy Hop for a lifetime and still not know it all.
