Acoustic and Electric Guitar - How They Stack Up Against Each Other

A guitar is a musical instrument, usually with six strings. This six-stringed guitar finds its origin in Spain. It can be played by handpicking or by finger-picks or plectrum. Plastic plectrums find wide usage today. However, the tonal quality is higher when tortoise shell picks are used.

Guitars can broadly be divided into two categories: acoustic and electric.

Acoustic guitars:

Acoustic guitars are generally crafted from wood, be it the low cost laminates or the pure hard wood like spruce, or a combination of both. Acoustic guitars are hollow-bodied and do not need an external amplifier. However, their utility is hampered in bands and orchestras which call for mandatory electric amplification. Amplification can be done through piezo and magnetic pick-ups.

There are many types of acoustic guitars. Among them, classical and steel string guitars are the most popular. The classical guitar is adorned with nylon strings. The strings are plucked with the fingers or finger-nails. Besides pure classical music all kinds of modern music too can be played on it. The music repertoire of the classical guitar is vast and varied. The roots of the classical guitar can be traced back to the lute, the vihuela and the renaissance guitar.

The steel strings of a steel-string acoustic guitar offer a brighter and louder sound. It is essentially larger than the classical guitar to accommodate the tension of the steel strings. A plectrum is a must for playing a steel-string guitar.

Electric guitars:

Unlike the case of an acoustic guitar, pick-ups are a must in electric guitars. Pick-ups convert the mechanical energy to electrical energy. A proper and compatible pick-up is a must for good tonal quality. Pick-ups which have found popularity among most musicians are either electromagnetic or piezoelectric.

The modern day electric guitar is made of solid wood like maple and mahogany. Some plastic material and aluminum alloys are used to give a sleek finish. Jazz, blues and rock-and-roll are the popular versions of music played on an electric guitar.

Lloyd Loar was one of the earliest inventors of the electric guitar but the first commercial guitar was made by Stromberg-Voisinet in 1928. In recent times, the electric guitar has revolutionized the music industry, especially rock music. The American culture is incomplete without the electric guitar.

The thin neck of an electric guitar allows the musician to comfortably hold and play the strings of the guitar. Being lightweight is another advantage of the electric guitar. Sophisticated equipment complements the electric guitar and a variety of effects can be produced like tapping and effects pedals. Modern electronics has a say in the tremendous sound effects that an electric guitar can produce.

Electric guitars can be of many types: solid body, hollow body and metal body. A solid body electric guitar is carved from hardwood and sports a lacquer finish. Pick-ups are used to reproduce sounds, which then pass through an amplifier and are heard from a speaker. Les Paul was one of the earliest inventors of this form of the guitar.

The hollow body electric guitar has a lighter weight and greater resonance. The pick-ups are lined up on the body of the guitar and it has one or two sound holes.

Metal body guitars were first manufactured in the 1950`s, but did not gain much popularity because of their inherent weight problem. Holes were dug into some of their variants which hampered the sound effects of the electric guitar.

Conclusion:

So, all we can infer is that acoustic guitars are a classical musician`s delight whereas an electric guitar is the soul and life of a band.

Schubert: Music for Clarinet & Piano $13.58 Ambitious folk from Barack Obama on down have claimed the mantle of audacity in recent years, and so it is with Swiss clarinetist Reto Bieri, who writes of his "audacity" in transcribing Schubert's violin-and-piano sonatas for clarinet and piano. The project is indeed a bit audacious; it's not something that would have been beyond the pale in 1816, when these sonatas were written, but in his transcriptions and performances Bieri treads into the territory of making something fundamentally new of these pieces. The best results are obtained when performers (or politicians) have the talent to deliver on audacious plans, and that's what happens here. Schubert's three "pianoforte sonatas with violin accompaniment," as they were originally styled, aren't among his most popular pieces, and that name suggests a rather old-fashioned set of pieces with a dominant piano part ornamented by simple violin lines. Bieri undercuts this expectation in two ways. First and in general, he pushes Schubert not back toward the 1790s but forward toward Schumann, placing strong emphasis on chromatic details, lingering on moments of harmonic tension, and taking moderate tempos that open the music up. Sample the unique combination of the old minuet with Romantic rumination in the third movement of the Sonata in A minor, D. 385 (track 6), for example. Second, and specifically, Bieri uses the clarinet to play up the ways in which Schubert subverts the expected roles of the violinist/clarinetist and the pianist. Many of the movements do begin with piano, accompanied lightly or not at all by the clarinet, which has its share of decorative figuration. But elsewhere things turn around completely: it is the clarinet that leads the music into the startling harmonic turns that, even though the overall scope of the music is smaller, mark these sonatas as works that point toward Schubert's great maturity. Bieri emphasizes these moments with sharp attacks on the clarinet, producing a sound and a detail that a violin wouldn't be able to make, but also finding something in the notes that has rarely been glimpsed before. Bieri's arrangements of various German dances form a perfect entr'acte between the second and third sonatas on the program, for here again he uses the clarinet to emphasize daring harmonic moves (try out the tension between mediant and dominant in the German Dance No. 13 from the D. 783 set, track 10, which often seems like an evocation of the naïve but here comes off as radical harmonic thinking). A gorgeous arrangement of Ständchen, from Schubert's final song cycle "Schwanengesang," concludes the program and underlines the melancholy poetry running through the whole. Piano Lessons For Kids | Classical Music For Children | Professional Musician California

My name is Alison White, and I am an experienced music teacher available to teach adults, families, and kids in the Bay Area.

My teaching philosopshy is that guitar, piano or voice lessons can help children in achieving goals, increasing their self esteem, and developing technical competence. Music lessons can also enhance self expression, fine motor coordination, and be used for other therapeutic purposes.

After an initial evaluation, each child will receive a custom music lesson plan. The plan will take into consideration their needs, abilities and musical goals.

Alison White has been writing songs since the age of 9 and hasn't stopped since. She has enthusiastically taught wee ones as well as adults, and they have fallen in love with the musician as well as the music.

Alison studied guitar voice and piano at the University of Redlands and San Jose State and teaches a broad range of styles including, classical, folk and rock.

Her piano training included studying with Randy Masters, Cole Dalton, Suzanne Warren and Bill Sussman. She is a professional musician and has been teaching for 20 years.

Her specialty is working with children and families teaching guitar, piano, singing, and songwriting and is especially patient with beginners.

Starting age for lessons can be as early as five years old.

I am very happy with my results working with children with special needs. I do this through movement, singing, guitar, piano, or percussion depending on their abilities and interests. Currently, my students include children with learning differences, as well as developmental disabilities including Autism.

Some clear benefits are the development of fine motor planning and sequencing skills, and improved self esteem. I have an eclectic approach based on my background in psychology and music and have the ability and willingness to adapt to the specific needs and skills of the child.

First thing you need to know is that in order for you to learn to play lead guitar you can not be a complete beginner at guitar.  You must have at least a basic mastery of guitar knowing the basic chords and being able to play rhythm guitar somewhat proficiently.

If you already have at least a year of basic guitar playing under your belt then you can take the next step and learn to play lead guitar.

There are two basic ways you can learn to play lead guitar.  You can take lessons or you can learn lead guitar online.  Personally I recommend any method that is more self taught so I would recommend learning to play lead guitar and lead guitar solos online.  There are several benefits to learning online including:

• The cost.  Lessons nowadays run at the rate of about $25 for a single half hour.
• Most guitar teachers are not competent enough.  One of the most important things you need to know about music is music is self expression and there are no rules. Lead guitar is no different.  Most teachers will weight you down with lots of rules. Learn to play lead guitar online ON YOUR OWN and you will naturally be much more creative and inventive and ultimately a MUCH better lead guitarist in the long run.
• The time wasted traveling to and from guitar lessons.

When it comes to lead guitar lessons online the most highly recommended is called "Guitar Burning Speed"  Guitar Burning Speed has numerous tips and tricks and lead guitar shortcuts that will enable you to spend less than an hour a day and see a gigantic increase in your lead guitar speed and proficiency in only a couple of weeks.
