Tim Young Releases Third album 'the Cost' on not Fade Away Records

New York, NY - Not Fade Away Records announced the release of Hell's Kitchen Rock n Roll legend Tim Young's latest album "The Cost" on major online retail stores this September 9th, 2008. Produced by Mark Meisel and Bob Becker of Counter Clockwise music of Detroit and mastered at Cincinnati's Sound images by Dave Davis, the album was unveiled at a pre-release party on Sunday July 27th in the Klub Room at mid-town Manhattan's Connolly's Pub.

"'The Cost' is about dealing with loss and the processes one might use to help get things back to a better balance in life," explained Tim. "Loss can cover a lot of ground but 'The Cost' is focused on two areas in particular: love and freedom - how each are tied together and how each must maintain their autonomy in order to flourish."

What the press is saying about Tim Young:

"Just when I despaired of ever again hearing tight, passionate, honest, slam-bang ROCK, along comes Tim Young. You just don't get this kind of stuff every day. It comes from a talent that has worked out in the "gym" to develop itself, and a maturity that reminds you just what personal rock and poetry are all about. Tim Young is the real thing."
- Eliot Camaren, The Clinton Chronicle

"Young's unschooled, urgent vocal delivery and lo-fi aesthetic combined with his solid and energetic guitar playing and fertile creativity places his music at the intersection between urban folk, heartland rock and outsider music."
- Jon Sobel, Blogcritics Magazine

About Tim Young
Tim Young is a veteran to the New York music scene for nearly two decades. Following the release of NO STRANGER in 2002 he began a string of over 80 Shows at the Electric Banana Bar on west 50th street. At the Banana Tim was able to solidify a Great fan base, record a live CD, and continue to produce new material. Once the Banana Bar closed in April of 2005, Tim was invited to perform weekly at the nearby Bellevue Bar where the act evolved into a duo with the addition of drummer Sand Edwards. Following the stint at Bellevue Bar, Tim Young Band was installed as the house band at Club Siberia.

Young began releasing CDs in 2002 with NO STRANGER, a collection of nine original Instrumentals self-produced and recorded at his home studio. For his second release RED, his debut as a solo singer/songwriter, he recorded sixteen original songs that explore the emotional landscape of an artist dealing with the way of life in twenty-first-century NYC. Tim Young's third CD THE COST features twelve new songs and a brand new version of his own tune "Renegade" from RED. THE COST takes some similar themes but develops them in a more complex way with the addition of a full band. Tim likes to call this record rock ‘n roll. He takes guitar, bass and drums and puts them together in a classy Classic kind of way to create music that envelopes not only rock, but also country and folk influences woven into the fabric of rock ‘n roll.

Currently, Tim Young Band performs once a month at Vintage Bar & restaurant located at 51st Street and 9th Ave. in Manhattan.

Young Galaxy

Young Galaxy

$32.99

In the new millennium, Canadian label Arts & Crafts has become a kind of hipster-fodder supplier, harboring artists like the Dears, Feist, Broken Social Scene, and Phoenix among others, so newbies Young Galaxy definitely have the necessary backing credentials to propel them into indie stardom. However, the band -- made up of ex-Stars touring guitarist Stephen Ramsay and his girlfriend Catherine McCandless, plus their backup musicians -- unfortunately don't offer much of their own musical innovation to make their self-titled full-length debut especially interesting, or even notable. Almost all the tracks on Young Galaxy rely on heavily-effected guitars, spacy keyboards, and echoey vocals to create the group's slow, warm, full sound (the exception is the out-of-place singer/songwriter-ish "Embers," one of two tracks sung predominantly by McCandless), but the band seems to be so focused on delaying and reverbing their chords and layering their voices that they forget that occasional key or tempo changes are necessary to make an album more than just atmospheric background. Neither Ramsay nor McCandless are particularly inspiring lyricists, and because of this they too often slip into simple rhymes and clichés. It's not like this in unavoidable; the Dears, for example, are able to combine drama and musicality, emotion and creativity, pushing towards the edge but never falling over it, but Young Galaxy neglect these things, and get so tied up in their own purpose, their own statement, that they forget the actual product has to be something truly worth listening to. The melodies are commonplace and remarkably similar to one another, and everything is so slow and dragging that it's hard to get through, it's hard to pay attention to, and it's hard to want to. Maybe Young Galaxy will form and define themselves in time, but until then, it's better to look elsewhere for stars. ~ Marisa Brown, RoviPerformers: Susan Beckett - Handclapping, Keyboards, Vocals; Catherine McCandless - Handclapping, Vocals; Chris Seligman - French Horn, Keyboards; Olga Goreas - Bass, Handclapping, Keyboards, Vocals; Kevin Laing - Drums; Jace Lasek - Bass, Drums, Guitar, Handclapping, Keyboards, Pedal Steel, Percussion, Vocals; Murray Light

The Music Lovers' Guide for Young People

The Music Lovers' Guide for Young People

$11.98

After a listen to The Music Lovers' Guide for Young People one thing is certain, the Music Lovers do indeed love music, to be more specific, the golden age of U.K.-based pop music that first bloomed in the mid-'80s with artists like Lloyd Cole & the Commotions, Prefab Sprout, and the Bluebells, and which was later perfected in the late '80s and early '90s by bands such as the Trash Can Sinatras and the Beautiful South. Like them, the Music Lovers are hopelessly heartbroken and romantic, literate almost to a fault, and totally committed to being as sophisticated as possible at all times both lyrically and musically. Indeed, the sound of Guide for Young People is rich and warm; the chiming guitars and restrained drumming that form the foundation are backed by a rotating array of strings, keyboards, and percussion. Above all this float the charming and sophisticated vocals of Matthew Edwards, which are joined by some lovely harmonies and the occasional appearance of Jun Kurihara's earthy vocals and provide a welcome female viewpoint to balance the restrained male angst. Her duet with Matthew Edwards on "I Don't Mind" is one of the high points of this very enjoyable album. Others are the low-key, moody, and dark: "Alan Lake," the rousing "Thank You, Cornelius Cardew," which starts the album off in fine fashion, and the majestic and moving ballad "The Sea and the Sun." As well as being sophisticated and smart, the group also proves to be a tough little rock combo on a couple tracks like the biting "Habit" and the hooky and driving "Plain Boyish." It gives the album an added dimension and appeal -- not that there was a lack of appeal to the rest of the tunes. Quite the opposite is true! Like the similarly influenced Young and Sexy and their most recent album Panic When You Find It, the Music Lovers have made a record here that stands with the best sophisticated guitar pop records of the '80s. You could throw Guide for Young People on after say, Two Wheels Good or I've Seen Everything, and not notice much of a drop-off in quality. If you know and love those two records, then you know what high praise that is. ~ Tim Sendra, RoviPerformers: Mike Gabriel - Theremin; Jun Kurihara - Accordion, Organ, Piano, Synthesizer, Tambourine, Tympani [Timpani], Vocals; Jon Brooder - Bass, Guitar, Harmonica, Tympani [Timpani]; Bryan Cain - Guitar (Electric), Mandolin, Vocals (Background); Matthew Edwards - Guitar, Vocals;

Mountain Music of Kentucky

Mountain Music of Kentucky

$24.98

In 1959, John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers made field recordings in the mountains of Kentucky of Appalachian folk performers who were virtually unknown to the record-buying public. This is no-nonsense, sometimes raw stuff, with fiddlers, banjos, a cappella singers, and Baptist church choirs presenting folk standards, blues-influenced numbers, stomping bluegrass, even the odd country song. It's got as much of the unadulterated American white folk feel as the older recordings on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music box (to use a celebrated example), though the material here is of better fidelity. Although some of these artists would make other recordings, only Roscoe Holcomb -- the most passionate and arresting of them -- would gain anything like substantial recognition. This is too basic and unschooled, not to mention too long, to hold the attention of the average folk or bluegrass fan, but scholars and roots aficionados will value its no-frills authenticity. Originally issued as a single LP in 1960, the two-CD reissue adds an hour of previously unreleased material, and lengthy historical liner notes by John Cohen. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: John Cohen - Sequencing; Willie Chapman - Banjo; James Crase - Fiddle; Roscoe Holcomb - Banjo, Guitar, Vocals; Lee Sexton - Banjo, Vocals; Marion Sumner - Fiddle; Martha Hall - Vocals; Martin Young - Vocals

Young Liars

Young Liars

$9.98

Despite their connections to the New York rock scene -- the band is based in Brooklyn's Williamsburg district and keyboardist/sound manipulator David Andrew Sitek has produced releases by the Liars and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs -- TV on the Radio's debut EP, Young Liars, is difficult to place, musically or geographically speaking. The angular, arty feel that informs the bands that Sitek has worked with is evident in TV on the Radio's music too, but in a cool, implosive way; combined with the keyboards and electronics that make up the backbone of their songs and Tunde Adebimpe's richly melancholy vocals, they don't sound like any other band out there. Elements of electronica, post-rock, film music, even spirituals and traditional African vocal music combine and recombine throughout Young Liars' five songs so organically that it's clear that TV on the Radio isn't striving to be "eclectic" or "atmospheric": the band is simply using their naturally diverse elements and influences to create something wholly distinctive. And Young Liars delivers just that, starting with the opening track, "Satellite," which begins with a martial, crunchy drumbeat and ominously droning synths before blossoming out into flutes and Adebimpe's close harmonies. Sitek and Adebimpe's collaboration is nothing less than inspired, with Sitek's skills as a sound sculptor providing the perfect foil for Adebimpe, who is something of a rarity in the world of indie music: a vocalist who can really sing. His falsetto on "Staring at the Sun" gives it an added depth, while his circular, layered vocals on the stunning "Blind" make the song's simple lyrics ("I seen a girl with a guy/Her hair like yours from what I remember/It's been so long since last December") truly moving. Likewise, "Young Liars" itself conveys a soulful paranoia that ties into the spiritual undercurrent of the entire EP and is expressed most literally by its hidden track, a radical cover of the Pixies' "Mr. Grieves." Part doo wop and part spiritual, it's almost completely unrecognizable to the original, but once again it proves that TV on the Radio doesn't travel obvious routes. More promising than most full-length debuts, Young Liars needs to be heard by anyone who values smart, challenging music. ~ Heather Phares, All Music GuidePerformers: Tunde Adebimpe - Vocals; Brian Chase - Drums; Katrina Ford - Vocals; Aaron Hemphill - Guitar; Nicolas Zinner - Guitar

Young and Thuggin'

While many perceive Cash Money Millionaires' massiveness to be everything that is wrong with 21st century hip-hop, it is hard to refuse the clique's uncanny knack for making catchy music. What is compelling about Cash Money's projects is their producers' acute sense of making melodies that have musical value. CMM projects are churned out cookie-cutter style, similar to the work of their New Orleans predecessor Master P (and to some extent projects by Dr. Dre and Wu-Tang Clan) in that an album is an umbrella project with a feature MC, in this case Turk. Although Turk is not an abundantly talented MC, he is very adept at carrying his lyrics over the Bayou beats dropped by CMM resident producer Mannie Fresh. With Fresh's syrupy beats dripping all over these danceable tracks, it is easy to see why the populace continues to demand more of this stuff. CMM in a sense have mastered the game; by maintaining absolute creative control they don't have to deal with a parent label (Universal) mandate because they have achieved platinum success with their own formula. ~ M.F. DiBella, All Music GuidePerformers: B.G. - Vocals; Big Tymers - Vocals; Birdman - Vocals; Mannie Fresh - Keyboards; Lil Wayne - Vocals; Mack 10 - Vocals; Mickey - Vocals
