Beginner's Guide to Flamenco $15.98 BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO FLAMENCO Nascente's Beginner's Guides kick in with their 15th releases this month and the carefully compiled Beginner's Guide to Flamenco courtesy of new compiler Jan Fairley Latin and Flamenco expert / regular contributor to Songlines magazine. Take any hot night in Andalucia, Seville, Madrid or Barcelona and you will find Flamenco. Walk into a bar late-night and there may be a group of people double hand clapping a sevillana while someone swirls their arms, fingers clicking, feet tapping out extraordinary percussive rhythms the sound of Flamenco continues to be ubiquitous in Spain. This compilation charts the progress of Flamenco music from the early classic sound onto the 70s, 80s with early fusions and culiminating with recent, more experimental mixes with other musical styles. Flamenco is as alive and kicking today as it ever was - and continues to be massively popular inside as well as outside Spain - as a famous Flamenco artist puts it Flamenco is a way of living, of moving your body, your hands, everything!!! |

Flamenco Chill $22.39 Flamenco Chill is the musical equivalent of a three-in-one Certs breath mint. The two-CD set introduces and provides context for Chambao, the group featured on roughly half the tracks and who also helped produce and compile the other ones. It introduces flamenco chill as a genre, which, by blending flamenco melodic touches and colors (acoustic guitar, female vocals, etc.) with electronica rhythms, basically pits emotional fire against musical ice and sidesteps the virtuosity requirements of traditional flamenco to boot. And it enables Sony Spain to re-market several '90s tracks from flamenco guitarist Vicente Amigo to a new audience, alongside tracks leased from minor labels. That may scan as a spot of cold-blooded music biz trend fabrication and calculation, but Flamenco Chill doesn't turn out that way. For the most part, the music sounds like an organic creation by artists who heard this synthesis in their heads and worked to make it real, initially an escape from classic flamenco limits by people who love it rather than a blatant cash-in attempt. Flamenco guitars with keyboard washes and synth strings set against programmed percussion on Doc K!'s "Media Luna" set the tone. Jose Luis Encinas' "Luna de Fiesta" features guitar and is quite nice in a mellow way that can play unobtrusively in the background without being total wallpaper music. María del Mar Rodríguez's vocals voice sets Chambao apart, but it does sound thin over the loping handclaps and guitar of "Playas de Barbarete." She sounds much better double-tracked, losing the thin, reedy flavor on "No Te Pierdas," after it opens as a haunting, atmospheric throb with a ghostly vocal loop. Vicente Amigo is pure flamenco, fine because it's a different flavor to work into the mix, but while his extended "Querido Metheny" with Paco de Lucía has its virtuoso moments along with handclaps and a lonely trumpet, it's ultimately sorta inconsequential. Much better and far more indicative of the flamenco chill sound is the seamless segue from Amigo's "Mensaje (Fandangos)" to G Club Presents Banda Sonora's "Guitarra G [G-Club's Chill Out Mix]," which is purely geared to the dancefloor. That is the other key creative aspect here -- how each artist weighs the proportion of club set flow to flamenco melody. The potential shows best on Denis Stern's "Way to Alhambra," where a nice bass underpinning and tabla percussion groove working under the melodious guitar is soon joined by French café/chanson accordion. Then Miguel Picasso's "Southern Nights" ups the chill quotient, with sampled vocals, more tabla and moodier electronica synth sounds, while Intro's forceful "Zambra" is more percussive with a stronger male voice and the Indian tabla flavor again beneath keyboard washes. Chambao's floating take on "Como el Agua" isn't particularly bad, but doesn't do much with the Camarón classic, either -- the soothing vocals and relaxing arrangement to "Instinto Humano" shows the group in a better light. Flamenco Arabe $11.98 An interesting fusion between Arabic music and flamenco. Though it's been done before (by Al Tall and Muluk el-Hwa), it's an enticing sort of fusion to listen to again. Some of the pieces are most straightforward flamenco with some additional Egyptian percussion, thanks to Hossam Ramzy. In other parts, it reverts to a straightforward Egyptian dance rhythm with some careful Spanish guitar in the background. It's when the two mesh that the sound is something worth hearing. Despite the relative obscurity of Rafa Tachuela (actually a German flamenco artist, hence the obscurity), the skill is certainly present to power the music forward. There is some able help from Said Kamal and Mohamed Naiem, providing the Egyptian sounds beyond Ramzy's percussion, and in the end, some help from the Sabri brothers (sons of Sabri Khan, not to be confused with the qawwal duo of the same name) in the addition of a touch of Indian music, as the artists attempt to explore the roots of flamenco through Egyptian music and the roots of Egyptian music through its Indian forebearers. Given that the rise of flamenco came after the Iberian peninsula had been taken over by the Moors, the links between North African music and flamenco are somewhat expected. When the two forms are brought back together to play in tandem, though, something more than the sum of its parts emerges. An excellent addition to the collection of any world music fusionist. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi Performers: Hossam Ramzy - Egyptian Percussion, Percussion; Kamal Sabir - Sarangui, Vocals; Maged Serour - Qanoun; Said Kamal - Egyptian Violin; La Moraima - Palmas, Clapping; Mohamed Naiem - Kavala, Nay, Bamboo Flute; Sarvar Sabri - Tabla; Adel Eskander - Violin; Danny Thompson - Bass; |

Flamenco Virtuoso (Jazz Club) $10.39 Jazz Club is a budget label that does bare-bones but well-compiled compilations from jazz greats across the spectrum of the music's history. Paco de Lucia is a case in point, though he's not immediately considered to be a jazz musician. Originally a flamenco player, he helped to expand that music, folding in its complex harmonics and fluid sense of phrase and understatement. He expanded jazz by weaving in flamenco's more complex rhythms, organic melodies, and timbral slips. This 18-cut collection details de Lucia's development from the beginning of his second decade as a leader in 1966 to his more experimental and expansive period through the late '90s when he had come full circle and returned to flamenco properly. De Lucia's music was always rooted in flamenco even at its most adventurous; that thread was always audible, and this set proves that in a fascinating way. The music here can be jarring in its brilliance at times, but it is always clearly delineated and its purpose is direct, full of nuance, beauty, and fiery precision, as well as plenty of soul. This is a great budget item for the uninitiated and a nice pick-up for the veteran who is looking for a new way to hear a favorite artist. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Enrique Soto - Clapping; J. Carlos Rebato - Clapping; Tino Di Geraldo - Pandeiro; Carlos Benavent - Bass; Jorge Pardo - Saxophone, Flute; Paco de Lucía - Clapping, Vocals, Guitar; Pepe de Lucía - Vocals; Ramón de Algeciras - Clapping, Guitar; Ricardo Modrego - Guitar; Ruben Dantas - Percussion |

Flamenco Fenomeno! $9.58 There are so many poor to middling flamenco records available that it can be daunting to choose one. However, Pepe Romero's Flamenco Fenomeno! is simply what the title suggests, a breathtaking collection of solo guitar performances of traditional flamenco tunes that is both stunning in its virtuosity and compelling in the clear and powerful emotion conveyed in Romero's playing. The technical quality of the performances is remarkable, with nary a missed note even during the most blindingly quick runs, but there's a purity and simplicity to Romero's playing as well. Many flamenco players tend to over-embellish their melodies with extraneous and distracting filigrees, but while Romero's playing is suitably ornate, as befits flamenco music, he wisely lets the melodies speak for themselves. The remarkable thing is that Romero, who has since become one of the most respected flamenco guitarists in the world, was a 15-year-old sophomore at Hollywood High School in 1960 when these performances were recorded. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Pepe Romero - Flamenco Guitar, Guitar |

Gypsy Flamenco $11.98 An interesting group of flamenco musicians, Grupo Macarena actually hail from outside of Iberia. There are Germans and Turks as well as French and Spanish performers in the collective. Here, they show off something interesting in flamenco -- both major regions of influence. The main vein of flamenco of course comes from Andalucia, with the stereotypical heart-rending songs and palmas. That's represented with approximately half of the album here, and performed relatively well. The group's specialty, though, is in flamenco from the Camargue -- a rhumba flamenco from the south of France. This is the style made famous around the world by the Gipsy Kings, and indeed the lead singer here worked with them for some time prior to their rise on the world scene. The sound here is unmistakable, having the "fleet-footed" tempo and guitar work along with some intense vocals. For Andalucian flamenco, there are many better artists and albums out there, but for the Camargue, the only real competition to this album comes from the Gipsy Kings themselves (and perhaps Los Reyes). Worth a shot for the rarity and quality of the Camargue alone. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi Performers: Felipe Sauvageon - Percussion, Vocals, Guitar; José Amador - Guitar, Percussion |

An Overview of Spanish Culture
The Spanish culture has always been intensely influenced by all who have passed her by; from the Romans and Greeks to the Moors, Phoenicians and North Africans. The primary languages of Spain are Valencia and Castellano but anyone can get by without them. Spain boasts of 77% Catholics and is considered a Christian nation although only 1% is Protestant. However, you will find other religions in Spain.Spain's most popular tradition and culture is bullfighting. This is more than a sport which has evolved over time. Bullfighting is as ritualistic as Spain's culture.
Besides bullfighting, the famous Flamenco is another undeniable Spanish culture. This famous Flamenco is a passionate dance form from Andalusia. It is very flamboyant with soulful guitar tunes and song called cante. It is a classical Spanish culture that is referred as the soul of Spain. Great artists such as Diego Velasquez, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso and Al Greco have been impacted by the Flamenco. Today, the dance is performed mainly for the tourists but in a softer version. The true Flamenco dance evokes the spirit of ecstasy and passion from its laments and soulful music and lyrics.Spain is not Spain without its full fledge festivals and fiestas. There are said to be over 3,000 fiestas and festivals celebrated all over Spain annually.
Spaniards are feisty and lively participants in every fiesta and festival celebrated; these celebrations can last a few days to several weeks. Another hard-to-miss Spanish culture is its cuisine. Spain is famous for its wide variety of local and traditional cuisine which includes poultry, meats, fish, vegetables and lots of spices; however, Spanish cuisine is not really spicy although there are plenty of spices.Spain is famous for its shellfish, potajes and churros. To go with these will be its aromatic local fine wines.
Theaters and operas, museums and art galleries form the other Spanish culture that should not be missed. There are over 800 museums with plenty of collectors' items that can occupy the visitor thoroughly. The national sport in Spain is soccer. Better known as football, this sport drives its fans into frenzy as they are filled with passion and fervor at any match. The wide spectrum of traditions and culture can be overwhelming for any tourist but the locals have long adapted to this flamboyant lifestyle very well, making it their very own. Spain has done very well in combining the charms of the Old Order with the flamboyance of the New.The country's folklore and rich heritage are more than enough to draw you into its life easily that you will never forget a trip to Spain.
