Listen to This $9.99 One of The Telegraph ’s Best Music Books 2011 Alex Ross’s award-winning international bestseller, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century , has become a contemporary classic, establishing Ross as one of our most popular and acclaimed cultural historians. Listen to This , which takes its title from a beloved 2004 essay in which Ross describes his late-blooming discovery of pop music, showcases the best of his writing from more than a decade at The New Yorker . These pieces, dedicated to classical and popular artists alike, are at once erudite and lively. In a previously unpublished essay, Ross brilliantly retells hundreds of years of music history—from Renaissance dances to Led Zeppelin—through a few iconic bass lines of celebration and lament. He vibrantly sketches canonical composers such as Schubert, Verdi, and Brahms; gives us in-depth interviews with modern pop masters such as Björk and Radiohead; and introduces us to music students at a Newark high school and indie-rock hipsters in Beijing. Whether his subject is Mozart or Bob Dylan, Ross shows how music expresses the full complexity of the human condition. Witty, passionate, and brimming with insight, Listen to This teaches us how to listen more closely. |

How Classical Music Affects the Brain
Unlike literature and poetry which rely on rationality to inspire emotion, music crosses right to the emotions. Listening to a particular type of music can influence your words, actions and thoughts. It will intensify alleviation and enjoyment, encourage the downcast spirits, and pacify the troubled ones.
Classical music affects the brain's abilities and organization, through its rhythm and melody. Melody and rhythm are two vital components of music that operate in very different ways. Melody boosts creative reasoning, while rhythm harmonizes these emotions with the fundamental patterns. The rhythm raises serotonin levels in your brain. Serotonin is a hormone that triggers nerve impulses that produce pleasant feelings. When the brain releases serotonin, tension is alleviated. In fact, depression is a result of the low production of this hormone. Music's rhythm can also arouse the Alfa-rhythm of the brain. This effect can be used to counter clinical depression.
Classical music has been known to affect the brain in various other ways. It improves spatial IQ, by enhancing the short and long term memory. Trained musicians usually score higher on word memory tests than other adults. Children exposed to classical music exhibit better cognitive skills. Just listening to classical music improves the brain's ability; playing it results in greater brain development.
The powerful effects of music are essential in life, and its beneficiaries always seem to achieve more in life. Many of the brilliant minds in history were either musicians or compelled by music's power. Einstein found solutions to complex problems and equations by improvising on the violin. Great men of the past, from Shakespeare to Napoleon, were to an extent influenced by the power of music.
