Essentially the most attractive thing about playing the guitar over other instruments may be the array of alternate or non-standard tunings that are available to the guitar player. Most guitarists will recognise the standard tuning of a six string as being EADGBe (the small e denoting the thinnest or highest pitch string). Any time that any one of these strings is adjusted so the note changes then an alternative tuning will be created. As with anything, some alternative tunings are more alternative than others! In popular music there are some common alternate tunings that have been used many times. I will list some of these later. There are also artists that have consistently used these alternate tunings to build and mould their own sound. Whoever has tried to play, songs performed by Nick Drake on a standard tuned guitar knows that it's extremely hard to work out how he played these songs. Understanding the tuning chosen helps to make the understanding and therefore the playing easier.
The list of alternate tunings is large and consists of the following widespread types and they are all obtainable on the free online guitar tuner:
· Dropped Tunings: Have got the sixth (or bigger bass guitar string) tuned low compared to the other 5 guitar strings. Dependent on just how low you have to get you could possibly need a different instrument to allow for deficiency of tension in the guitar string. E.g. A Baritone guitar.
