The Formal Female $14.38 Messy breakup albums or songs are manifold throughout popular music's recent history, from Marvin Gaye to Kanye West, so JW Farquhar's home-recorded 1972 acid rock curiosity is not unique thematically -- as the liner notes to the 2008 reissue explain, he had recently "extricated" himself from a marriage that left him more than a little on edge. Yet The Formal Female does deserve individual consideration thanks to its sound and place in history -- if utterly unknown at the time, its implied impact has grown more with the years. Recording everything himself, with three goofily named "sidemen" providing accompaniment ("Slash Mullethead" definitely predicts some sort of future somewhere), Farquhar let it all out over two sides of vinyl, and the resultant combination of rough-edged home recording limitations -- Farquhar notes the trouble he had to go through to soundproof his urban apartment -- and rambling but relatively focused performances and singing sounds incredibly prescient today, a forerunner to everyone from R. Stevie Moore and Jandek to any number of lo-fi artists. With basic drum machine work anchoring much of the songs, Farquhar's half-sung half-mumbled vocals, distanced harmonica (sounding almost more like a dub melodica effort at points), and queasy soloing are both of their time and still somehow fresh, an effective combination of elements that often surprises. Farquhar's jaunty, clearly vocalized folksinging on "The Want Machine" transforms into a bizarre jive-talk/growl dialogue while rhythm pulses and spindly feedback coast along, while the reappearance of his voice toward the end of "My Bundle of Joy," understated as it is, still adds a strong blast of drama to what might be the album's strongest track. When Farquhar concludes the three-part title track with a fuzzed-out take on the familiar wedding march that sounds like an ominous, bitter sting, it's little surprise where his sympathies lie, but there's a bit of balm as well with "Where Have You Been," a vocal/guitar-only number that shows Farquhar's knack for raspy, bluesy folk, straight up. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Callust Likfinker - Guitar; JW Farquhar - Pedal Bass, Harmonica, Guitar (Rhythm), Vocals, Guitar; Slash Mullethead - Percussion |

Folk Is Not a Four Letter Word, Vol. 2 $13.59 The second volume of Folk Is Not a Four Letter Word gathers an admirably eclectic variety of rare folk-rock of the late '60s and '70s from around the world, and not just from English-speaking countries or English-singing artists. There are some U.S. and U.K. acts here, to be sure, and most of the tracks are performed in English, but there are also artists from Sweden, Holland, France, and Germany. More often than not, this travels the gentler, folkier, more mystical and haunting side of folk-rock, with a higher percentage of female vocals than many such compilations boast, and with Pentangle and Joni Mitchell in particular (and perhaps some Mary Hopkin and Melanie) often standing out as audible influences. But this really is an eclectic anthology within its chosen genre, with some cuts that also show the influence of progressive rock and psychedelia. Which specific tracks you like the best might depend on your specific tastes, but certainly the Welsh trio Y Triban give Joni Mitchell's "Night in the City" a very effectively unusual (and very Pentangle-ish) arrangement; Elly & Rikkert's Dutch-sung "Heksenkring" is an almost menacingly playful male-female duet; and Paul Parrish's "Dialogue of Wind and Lover" is a fey Donovan-ish near-gem strongly recalling that singer's folk-rock-jazz-raga hybrids, though with shyer vocals. A few of these artists might be familiar to CD-age collectors for having been honored with reissues of their own in the years shortly before this 2006 release (Chuck & Mary Perrin, Jan & Lorraine, Susan Christie), but the substantial majority will likely be unfamiliar even to folk-rock specialists, so rare (and/or unexposed in the English-speaking world) were the original pressings. But it's not a snobbish collection that values rarity for its own sake or excludes artists who aren't usually classified as folk-rockers. Commendably, its scope includes a track by Pentangle themselves (by far the most famous artist on the CD), albeit it's a non-LP B-side "I Saw an Angel"; there's a late-'60s effort ("Sunrise") from Alexis Korner, usually thought of as a bluesman; a Christian rock band, 11.59; and a song by a German actress, Sibylle Baier (most known for her role in Wim Wenders' 1974 film Alice in the Cities), that was recorded in the early '70s but not released for decades. True, for the most part this doesn't rival the best folk-rock of the era, and it's unfortunate that not all of the original label and release dates are included in the annotation (though compiler Andy Votel's liner notes are excellent). But it's a good, adventurous compilation for folk-rock hounds, whether they just want to sample some virtually unknown recordings from the era, or use this as a sampler that might introduce them to artists they want to more fully investigate. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |

Joan Baez - Iconic Singer and Activist
Joan Baez is not just a musician she is also a political icon. The artistry of her music comes second to her political conscience. Joan Baez uses songs to relate and encourage fundamental political ideas. She could possibly be referred to as the mother of female singer songwriters she was one of the first females to have the songs which she composed taken seriously and used by her peers.
Her very first lp called simply Joan Baez was launched on the Vanguard recording label in 1960. It was released after her fantastic performance at the Newport Folk Festiva the previous year. Surprisingly, it took just 4 days to record that lp with some tracks being put down in just a single take.
It is interesting that Joan Baez chose to release her 1st lp on the less well known Vanguard recording label. It is rumoured that Columbia, who at the time was a huge record label, had previously offered her a contract. Joan instead chose the much smaller independent recording label and got the artistic licence she desired to truly express herself and to play the songs she believed should be heard.
Joan Baez Vol 2, released in 1961, was the album that definitely lit a fire under her career. On that lp her crystal-clear soprano voice reinterpreted typical folk melodies accompanied only by an acoustic guitar. The lp got onto the best seller list and made Baez a small celebrity; it climbed to No. 13 on the Billboard album chart. It was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Folk Performance category. The Greenbriar Boys played on 2 of the tracks on the album.
Joan Baez used her newly found popularity to defend a diverse range of significant causes. She grew to be heavily involved with the pacifist movement. Her work for this movement resulted in her spending a lot of time with Bob Dylan, whom she also recorded a lot of songs with. Joan Baez sang We Shall Overcome at the Washington March led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1963. The passion with which she sang on that occasion still sends shivers down the spine of a number of people not just fans or Joan Baez or folk songs.
Joan Baez 5 (1965) is the Lp with which she publicised the message of the Greenwich Village Movement. The lp had far less traditional folk tunes on it than her earlier albums. At this point Joan Baez grew to become the poster girl for protest melodies, sad to say this lead to her writing very little non-protest related work during the following years. However, when you consider that folk music has for centuries documented the challenges of ordinary people Joan Baez during that time was being faithful to the origins of folk music.
