Pure 80's Love: The #1 Hits $9.28 The phrase at the top of the sleeve for Pure 80's Love: The #1 Hits states, "18 Classic Love Songs From the Decade of Excess." With the existence of jokey compilations focusing on "mullet rock," who knows if UTV/Universal are being serious or ironic when they refer to these songs as classics? Regardless, this disc -- released just in time for Valentine's Day -- is based on romantic number one hits from the '80s. Most of the songs are ballads, including Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years," Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is," Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes' "Up Where We Belong," and Lionel Richie's "Truly." The only song that doesn't exactly fit into the one-on-one scheme of things is Christopher Cross' "Sailing," but it does fit right in from a musical standpoint. The stylistic range of the artists -- from adult contemporary to teen pop to hard rock to urban -- is quite broad, too. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi |

SNL Lost And Found SNL In The 80's $10.87 Rated: NRSynopsis: Following the departure of the show's original cast and creator after five seasons, SNL in the '80s is a look back at a decade of turbulent, often uncertain times that included the hiring and firing of several casts, numerous writers, producers and ultimately the revitalization of the show with the return of executive producer Lorne Michaels. Documentary filmmaker Kenneth Bowser juxtaposes '80s musical acts from the show to illustrate the mood of the times with interviews and stories from SNL alumni Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Gilbert Gottfried, Jim Belushi, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Al Franken, Kevin Nealon, Nora Dunn, Jon Lovitz, Dana Carvey, Robert Smigel, and Conan O'Brien to give you a first-hand look at the highs and lows that occurred behind the scenes. SNL in the '80s also features rare performances by artists James Brown, Queen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bonnie Raitt, Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, Harry Connick, Jr., Don Henley and The Kinks as well as interviews and footage that have never been seen before! |

80's Mixtape $29.59 Celebrating the era when creating your own compilations meant anxiously waiting for your favorite song to play on the radio, then haphazardly recording it onto a prehistoric tape deck instead of the more modern and simpler mouse-clicking method of visiting iTunes, 80s Mixtape is a three-CD, 66-track trip down memory lane for any music obsessive who grew up in the decade that spawned new wave, post-punk, and electro-pop. A more alternative antidote to the plethora of Stock, Aitken & Waterman-heavy pure pop retrospectives on the market, this 2011 Rhino collection largely focuses on the kind of artists who were more likely to grace the covers of the NME and Melody Maker than Smash Hits and Just 17. Although the majority of artists included will be familiar to most listeners, the selection of songs choices might not necessarily be the most instantly recallable. There are still massive hits which remain airplay staples to this day, from the likes of Simply Red ("Money's Too Tight to Mention"), the Pretenders ("Don't Get Me Wrong"), and Prince ("Kiss"), alongside cult classics from Joy Division ("Love Will Tear Us Apart"), the Smiths ("How Soon Is Now?"), and Orange Juice ("Rip It Up"). But elsewhere, the compilers have cleverly thought outside the box and cherry-picked some of the best lesser-known and lesser-appreciated tracks from established artists. So instead of Aztec Camera's Top Three smash "Somewhere In My Heart," there's their 1982 non-charting single "Pillar to Post"; instead of the Communards' chart-topper, "Don't Leave Me This Way," there's their previous minor hit "Disenchanted," and instead of Swiss duo Yello's iconic "The Race," there's the little-known 1985 release "Oh Yeah." Elsewhere, there are less predictable inclusions from Everything But the Girl ("Each and Everyone"), the Cure ("Why Can't I Be You"), and Scritti Politti ("Asylums in Jerusalem"), alongside several one hit-wonders (the Colour Field, the Dream Academy, Flash and the Pan), and a few acts who never crossed over to the mainstream, such as Monochrome Set and the Higsons. With artists as diverse as the Jesus and Mary Chain, Chris Rea, and Strawberry Switchblade, 80s Mixtape sets itself apart from similar releases by ignoring the obvious and allowing '80s indie kids to rediscover an eclectic treasure trove of forgotten gems, making it one of the most essential and original retro compilations of the year. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi |

Greatest Rock Hits of the 80's $5.58 The title of MCA Special Products' Greatest Rock Hits of the 80's shouldn't be taken literally -- after all, these songs are closer to new wave than "rock & roll." Instead, it should be thought of as a random sampler of new wave and pop hits from MCA and MCA-affiliated artists. If you have those expectations, the disc will be quite enjoyable, since it contains such staples as "I Think We're Alone Now," "Safety Dance," "You Keep Me Hangin' On," "Right on Track," "I Can Dream About You," "Wouldn't It Be Good," "Heaven Is a Place on Earth," "Pass the Dutchie," and "Everybody Have Fun Tonight," all of which are enough to make it worth its budget-line price. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |
